Wiley
Senior Engineering Manager - Data Analytics & Insights
Led 16 team members across two teams: Wiley Journal Insights (WJI), an analytics platform using insights to optimize journal management and editorial workflows, and Reference Entity Master (REM), a centralized data repository ensuring accurate identity management and improving efficiency, analytics, and decision-making across Wiley. My responsibilities included collaborating with the Product Owner on technical product vision and roadmap, driving improvements in efficiency, accuracy, and cost optimization, contributing to technical decisions and development, overseeing module implementation, ensuring adherence to Engineering Best Practices (EBPs) and CI/CD practices, managing the team, mentoring and guiding career growth, conducting performance reviews, collaborating across cross-functional teams and senior stakeholders, and conducting R&D on new technologies and developing POCs. Led the development and contributed to architecture and launch of the terabyte-scale WJI platform, replacing a costly proprietary system and saving an estimated USD 460K annually, while improving performance and uptime. Re-engineered the WJI application architecture from the ground up with a new data-centric design featuring Snowflake and S3 as data sources and a landing zone, Spark for processing and transformation, and a serving layer of Elasticsearch, microservices, and a React-based presentation layer. Identified and resolved a critical query processing issue, pivoting to a more scalable solution and saving significant development time. Designed a simplified, SQL-inspired JSON-based query API, reducing boilerplate code and enhancing scalability. Designed and implemented an innovative JSON-based, declarative API testing framework, significantly reducing test creation time and accelerating development cycles. Encouraged team innovation in emerging areas. My team developed an LLM-based feature for summarizing chart trends and secured 3rd place in an internal AI Hackathon by developing a solution to infer article keywords from research titles and predict future downloads using time-series forecasting. Led the REM development team in creating the REM repository by matching entity records from 6+ authoritative sources using fuzzy matching and assigning global IDs to ensure accurate and up-to-date entity information for internal source systems. Implemented ETL pipelines using Kubernetes-based Airflow, executing containerized workflows to ingest and process datasets from various authoritative sources, with matched data stored in DynamoDB and Elasticsearch. Provided technical expertise in troubleshooting complex incidents, debugging code, and guiding design enhancements. Provided guidance and support to Platform Engineer, leading to an 80% reduction in tickets (Power BI and Snowflake) by proactively identifying major issues, implementing best practices, and educating end users. Collaborated with stakeholders across the Wiley SL EBP Guild to drive SDLC improvements and establish language standards. Collaborated with a data scientist to identify, review, and provide feedback on areas within the domain that could be used for prediction and forecasting. Worked on Innovation POCs, including offloading Power BI processing to Spark on S3 Iceberg tables, researching federated SQL engines like PrestoDB. Championed generative AI for increased productivity by leading hands-on GitHub Copilot sessions for internal and external audiences, and participating in the company\’s Generative AI Learning Beta Group. Led engineering teams for CRM and Educational Services platforms, consistently exceeding performance expectations (Excelled rating) and earning a promotion.
